This is me, circa 1979, in front of the giant tree in the yard of the first house I ever lived in. Isn't the outfit amazing? The socks and sweater are a set, given to me by my godmother Aunty Zany. This is always referred to as the picture with the "hot sox" outfit.
Ever since I started dyeing, I've been tossing around ideas on doing something fresh with this concept. Once Addy was born and the hot sox sweater was passed on to her (I don't know what ever became of the socks), I knew I needed to act on it.

I started working with a sock blank, handpainting it in gradient rainbow tones, and steaming it.

I rather like the effects - not quite as vibrant as I had hoped, but it is making a nice gradient, heathered effect pair of leg warmers. (Because, as you know, we just can't get enough of baby leg warmers.)

The blank is a sock weight superwash merino and nylon blend yarn knit doubled. Instead of knitting two-at-a-time sock-weight leg warmers, I decided to use the two strands together as a worsted weight, loosely based on the Purl Bee's Baby Leg Warmers pattern.
Don't forget about the Mr. Darcy giveaway! Entries are open until January 14
