I'm really ridiculously excited about these little hats - even googled some pictures of R2-D2 to add in some more detail. (Did you know you can purchase R2-D2 swimsuits? Google is amazing.)
Because I was making both hats for babies, I used Cascade 220 Sport (instead of the worsted weight) and size 6 needles to size it down a bit for tinier heads. The design is really quite simple - just a basic striped hat with duplicate stitching for details. The Purl Bee has a fantastic tutorial on duplicate stitching, and I'm addicted to it now - such a simple, fun way to add in details! I really like the subtle three-dimensional quality it gave to the R2-D2 hat, too.

Kate--What a great hat!!! Have you seen this crocheted baby hat that looks like a breast?
I guess it's for those moms who get criticized for breastfeeding in public. http://bluemilk.wordpress.com/2011/07/07/how-to-do-discrete-breastfeeding/
You find the best stuff!
Hah! Finally, a cultural reference I understand. I'm lost when people say they knit a dalek something or vampire this or that...but I understand R2D2~!
ah! You have gone a few steps ahead of me. I still have that pattern favorited but have yet to knit it.
That hat is adorable! I'll be my grown son would like it as he was born right about the time those movies started. I'll have to be sure to show him your handiwork. Thank you for sharing and thank you for your kind comments on my blog. Happy Fiber Arts Friday!

So cute and just the right amount of geekery. I totally agree on novelty hats for babies :D
